CLARK COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY STATEMENT ON REVEREND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. NATIONAL MONUMENT AND EVENT IN CLARK COUNTY

Las Vegas — Clark County Democratic Party Chair Chris Miller today released the following statement on the opening of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Monument on the Washington Mall in Washington, DC:

“On Sunday, August 28th, 48 years after the historical ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, a national monument, dedicated to fallen civil rights hero Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be open to the public. Thousands have traveled to Washington, DC for a weeks worth of events leading up to the monument’s unveiling Sunday, where President Barack Obama will speak.

With the election of President Obama we saw King’s ‘dream’ reach a height that many people, including me, thought we’d never see in our lifetime. The Clark County Democratic Black Caucus (CCDBC) led the march toward the president’s eventual election in Nevada with a rally at Las Vegas’ own King statue. This Sunday, as thousands celebrate in DC, the CCDBC will host a rally to kick off the president’s reelection effort.

You wouldn’t know it from reading a newspaper or flipping on the news, but President Obama has done more in his first year as president than many have done in a full term. From passing much needed health care reform, repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Wall Street Reform and putting two women on the Supreme Court; President Obama has worked tirelessly to fulfill King’s dream, and ours. It hasn’t been easy, but he has the battle scars to prove he’s done everything he possibly could to accomplish our goals.

As DC celebrates this wonderful occasion, we hope that residents of Clark County will reflect on how far we’ve come as a nation, and how much farther we have to go to achieve the Dream, and be that more perfect union.”
